The People First Platform vs " Strong Economy"
It is unfortunate that many "Libertarians" who call themselves conservative, have a difficult time balancing budgets. The SaskParty which is essentially a party made of both former Liberals and PC members has struggled to create surplus or even balance budgets over the past 13 years.
The Sask Party like the Ontario PC's and the UCP in Alberta seem to call the opposing team i.e. the provincial NDP tax and spend parties, which is contrary to what they actually do. The Sask Party chose to increase the PST from 5% to 6% in order to "balance" the budget and gave away tax breaks to their rich friends and donors.
The Saskatchewan NDP (CCF) has released both the fiscal tables (i.e. how promises will be paid for and reducing the debt at the same time) and the full platform. The NDP/ CCF in Saskatchewan have a history of direct investment producing good stable jobs which in turn help the economy flourish. One of the ideas during this election campaign was to create a crown which produced generic drugs. If such a plan was implemented the price of drugs would be substantially reduced and a path to universal pharma care will be created.
The NDP platform talks a lot about education and health. The Sask Party tends to shy away from education. Why would the Sask Party not take public education seriously? It works in their favour. The less informed the electorate is the less pressing questions are asked. We have some serious mismanagement issues in Saskatchewan including the Lifelabs/ STC fiasco, the Global Transportation Hub, the Regina bypass and CKOM. The NDP is wanting to reduce class sizes and invest in rural health care in a democratic and transparent manner, so that regular folk will have a step up in life and on top of that contribute to the economy in a meaningful way.
I think it is about time we ask the Sask Party why they deserve another term after selling the province out to major private corporations, selling public assets to friends and donors at less than market value. If any of these clowns in the Sask Party were to run an investment/ mutual fund, my suggestion would be to run the other way. Don't be fooled by the Sask Party talk of small government, lower taxes and better services.
