A progressive vision for Saskatoon 2020
The municipal election is on Nov 09 2020.
What would I like to see on the agenda?
Goal: Dramatically reducing GHG emissions and creating a level field for all income levels.
I have split what I want to see into various categories
Transport:
Protected bikes lanes throughout the city (including intersections)
Mandatory secure bike facilities for all non home based businesses
Trolley bus on major arteries (22nd Street and 8th Street)
Increasing the frequency of buses
Introducing a point to point car/van/ truck share
Rumble strips at every intersection (Traffic calming)
Crime and Safety:
More cops on bikes
more community policing
All vehicles running on gasoline should be phased out to bring in electric vehicles
Housing:
Phasing out R1 and encouraging mixed use
Create a new zoning plan which phases out parking requirements
Any new mall built should have multiunit housing attached to it
Making sure all basic neighbourhood facilities can be reached within a 20 min walk
Utilities
Transition to nuclear power (base load), wind and solar
Cost of water and sewage pipe replacement should be added on as separate line item on property tax
Urban farming
Encouraging households to grow their own vegetables and chickens if so desired
I understand that some of what is proposed may be way out there for some, and some may require working closely with the provincial government esp with regards to power and generation. This is my platform as a private citizen.
